Clear vision starts with getting the right correction in the right place. Single vision lenses provide one prescribed viewing range across the lens, making them suitable for distance, near or dedicated intermediate vision depending on the wearer’s needs.

Although single vision ophthalmic lenses provide one viewing range, the prescription itself can address several common refractive errors. The key is determining where clear focus is needed and selecting the appropriate lens power for that distance.
Myopia causes distant objects to appear blurred because light focuses in front of the retina. Minus-powered single vision lenses redirect the light so distant objects can be brought into clearer focus, whether the spectacles are worn throughout the day or for specific distance tasks.
With hyperopia, light would otherwise focus behind the retina, which can make near vision difficult and may also affect distance vision depending on the prescription. Plus-powered lenses provide the required correction to bring the image into focus.
Astigmatism occurs when differences in the curvature of the cornea or internal lens prevent light from forming a single clear focus. Single vision ophthalmic lenses can incorporate cylinder power and axis correction to compensate for this irregularity while also correcting accompanying myopia or hyperopia.
As the eye's natural focusing ability reduces with age, close work can become more difficult. A dedicated near-vision prescription can be made as single-vision lenses for activities such as reading or other close work. Because the lens is set for one viewing range, another pair or a multifocal design may be more appropriate when clear vision is needed across several distances.
