The right spectacle lens depends on more than prescription power. We look at four practical factors: how much thickness the prescription is likely to create, how the wearer moves between viewing distances, the frame geometry, and whether additional light protection or photochromic performance is needed. Asahi Lite Japan developed the world's first 1.60, 1.67 and 1.74 index plastic spectacle lenses. Higher refractive indices allow prescription power to be achieved with less lens curvature and potentially reduced thickness, making these materials particularly valuable where stronger prescriptions or lens aesthetics are a priority. Final thickness still depends on prescription, frame dimensions and lens design.
Asahi Lite UV3G is designed to extend protection beyond conventional UV wavelengths. Asahi-Lite states that the material blocks UV light through 400 nm and more than half of the light at 420 nm, helping reduce exposure to shorter-wavelength high-energy visible light. Because the protection comes from the material itself, it is not dependent solely on a surface coating.
Selected Asahi Lite progressive lenses use digital free-form technology to optimise distance, intermediate and near vision. Premium designs can account for measurements such as vertex distance, pantoscopic tilt and frame wrap, allowing the lens geometry to be better matched to how the spectacles actually sit in front of the wearer's eyes.
